International Football Debate

by ajnspencer @ Monday, Nov. 17, 2008 - 12:48:30

Right, this should kick off some debate and probably have me called unpatriotic... but here goes.

I don't give a gnat's nut about international football any more...

International caps, especially for England, are almost being given away with a box of Weetabix these days and all we hear about England is grief from newspapers that know we want the bad, not the good.

My heart doesn't swell with pride when Liverpool players get called up, I just pray they stay on the subs bench or get sent off after 15 seconds because then they wont get injured.

I felt for Jamie Carragher who was, week in week out, proving himself a quality defender while constantly being overlooked by England. Having said that, though... I was happy he wasn't playing, happy when he retired from internationals, because then we knew he wasn't going to get injured playing for England against the Faroe Islands or some such in a friendly.

Feel free to prove me wrong but I think the majority of football fans would prefer to see their team win a trophy than their country, so for many fans these meaningless friendlies in the middle of the season only serve to potentially hinder these dreams.

I can't imagine it's just Liverpool with Gerrard and Torres, Man Utd fans must worry about losing Rooney, Ferdinand and Ronaldo, Chelsea fans must fear for Terry, Cech and Bosingwa... As proud as Aston Villa fans must be to see so many players in the squad, what if a freak injury strikes Barry and/or Young and/or Agbonlahor?

I'm not going to start off on the argument about who pays their wages because football clubs have shot themselves in the foot with that one, but I know the best I hope for is that most, if not all, Liverpool players return unscathed.

If that makes me unpatriotic, then so be it... but the only white or red kit I want to see our players in has Carlsberg written across the front.

Once upon a time the only football I'd watch was the England internationals but these days they mean sweet FA . . terrible pun I know.

There is no point to friendlies because even I fancy my chances of getting picked and getting capped. Trying out new players . . they are on TV 7 nights a week, you don't need to be a rocket scientist to work out who is worth picking and who isn't.

However I believe they should join the world of reality TV. The public pick the team . . the players with the most votes play for their country. At least that would make interesting viewing :)

Bol, wouldn't surprise me...

To make a substitution text the players number to 81234...

I just hate football:)

I'm not sure I agree, I love watching Ireland and their games are very important to me. Also, there is nothing in club football that can compare to a great World Cup like the last one.

Still though, you're right, friendlies are a joke. :)

I will watch internationals, but to be honest, I'm past caring about the results. The way I see it, I dislike Wayne "Shrek" Rooney with an intense passion because of the way he left Everton, yet when he pulls on an England shirt, I'm supposed to forget all about that? There are other players who I have similar feelings for (although nowhere near as strong!), and again, I'm supposed to support them then?

That said, watching the Germany - England game with a few Germans was quite funny as they were getting worked up over it!

I think that the hole debate about the break has been well overworked this time as half of the England team pull up injured!!

I agree! The friendlys are for young players to get experince. Here in Sweden the stars like Zlatan Ibrahimovic often rest in frienly games. But in qualifying and World Cup the are a tribute and loves to but on the yellow and blue skirt.
