My favourite story from the close season...

by ajnspencer @ Friday, Jul. 25, 2008 - 06:36:30

Whatever the outcome in the end this is a top little story...

Peter Jackson is the manager of Lincoln City, during this offseason he spotted a young man hanging around outside his office.

When he went to challenge him the 24 year old said he was Romanian, his brother lived in Lincoln and could he have a trial at the club, thank you very much...

He handed over his CV and Jackson told him to come in for pre-season training and promptly forgot about him, just another random thing in a busy time for Jackson, who is only just recovering from intense medical treatments for cancer.

Well, he was reminded soon enough when Jackson came out for the first training session of pre-season... and found our Romanian friend, striker Adrian Patulea, running around the training ground... with his wife... on his back to build up his fitness.

It must of worked though, after two days of training he was thrown on during the second half of a friendly against city rivals Lincoln United.

The golden egg at the end? He went on to score a hat-trick in his short runout and is now a potential full signing.

Is it just me or is that real football rather than the daily stories about weepy diver boy and his blatant attempts to move to Madrid or whether Frank Lampard might have to move if he's not getting more than 120 grand a week...

Greedy Bastards .........................or Loyalists.

by wisty8golf @ Wednesday, Jul. 23, 2008 - 13:32:26

The shout around many soccer grounds this season will surely be "Greedy Bastard" as fans vent their anger on overpaid, under-talented "stars"
Frank Lampard ,threatening to leave Chelsea until his salary of £140,000 per week, yes...per week is increased. GB's.......you bet

Do marketing types take any notice...

by ajnspencer @ Monday, Jul. 21, 2008 - 12:52:07

...of what's going on in football?

I was just on the Tottenham website and their main advertising banner includes in it's four player shots:

Pascal Chimbonda, who during the January 08 transfer window said he didn't care less about Spurs, he just wanted the money of a move to Newcastle.

Dimitar Berbatov, who's told Spurs he wants to move to Man Utd.

and Robbie Keane, who's told Spurs he wants to move to Liverpool (hurrah!)

Now, I don't know about your team but I fear that may not be the best advert for a company to show they're close to the club and what's going on...

Cricket scores

by Rampage @ Friday, Jul. 18, 2008 - 13:13:00

Last night I saw Hertha BSC in the first qualifying round of the UEFA Cup against Nistru Otaci of Moldova. They qualified via the Fair Play League (there's a rant on that coming soon).

Hertha won 8-1, and I think that that was the highest scoring game I have ever been present at. Frankly, it was dreadfully boring.

So, footy fans, what is the highest scoring game you've seen? Was anyone at Man Utd's famous 9-0 win over Ipswich in the mid-nineties? Or Liverpool's 8-0 mashing of Besiktas last year? Or Middlesborough hammering Man City 8-1 at the end of last season?

Tell us about your cricket score experiences. I feel like a bit of a freak for being so bored by nine goals. Please justify my boredom!

Footballers are slaves...

by Rampage @ Thursday, Jul. 10, 2008 - 15:41:25

...according to Sepp Blatter.

His statements in the above article made me almost scream in rage. What an imbecile! What a cretin!

Let's have a look at some of the best ones.

I think in football there's too much modern slavery in transferring players or buying players here and there, and putting them somewhere.

Yes indeed, it's a really great idea to compare some of the highest paid people in the world, doing something that they love once a week, who are in a position to stop doing that job any time they want to slavery. SLAVERY.
Let's define slavery briefly, shall we?
"Slavery is a social-economic system under which certain persons — known as slaves — are deprived of personal freedom and compelled to work."
Can't add much more to that.

Moving on.

The reaction to the Bosman law is to make long-lasting contracts

A couple of things spring to mind here.
1. Of course the team will want a long term contract to avoid their best players buggering off. Blatter seems to be making out that they are evil selfish megalomaniacs (which, of course, we all know they are) for wanting to do this. Of course they want to look after their multi-million pound investment! If Microsoft buys yahoo, are they going to be willing to let it go to their biggest rivals for free in a couple of years? Of course not!

2. Signing contracts is optional. If the player doesn't like a clause in it, don't sign it. If you sign a contract for 5 years, it is not unfair to presume that it should last five years, not until a better offer comes along.

I love football. Sometimes I wonder why though.

A bloody brilliant marketing idea...

Best quote ever: " I went home to watch the Tottenham game on TV, but I fell asleep." - Arsene on his first night as Arsenal manager

Roll on August!!!
